The first three decades of mainstream internet adoption resulted in massive improvements in the speed and efficiency at which humans could communicate with each other. Collaborative productivity increased immeasurably as we gained the ability to communicate asynchronously at the speed of light with no barriers imposed by physical location.

The internet steadily continued to pervade virtually all areas of life and each decade saw more innovative possibilities unlocked. Social media disrupted the way we build relationships with one another; streaming services made access to entertainment content instantly available at any time; online shopping meant that physical goods could be delivered straight to your doorstep in a matter of days if not hours.

As these advancements became increasingly commonplace, so too did our reliance on the internet for mundane tasks. People grew accustomed to using their digital devices for nearly every task imaginable - for both personal and business use. Many companies began reinventing how they delivered services through new web portals. Blazingly fast broadband connection speeds enabled businesses everywhere, from global enterprises down to local mom & pop stores, to become competitive within the ecommerce space that was once only accessible by large companies with expansive IT infrastructure investments.

The name of the game was automation - continuing to enhance human productivity by reducing the amount of human time that had to be devoted to accomplishing a given task. When large language model breakthroughs were achieved in 2022, another renaissance began.

Initially, GPT was used as a tool to assist people with their communication needs. Many people used it as a new form of search engine, as a writing partner, or as a virtual assistant to bounce ideas off of. Over time, the software became more sophisticated and was able to generate responses that were almost indistinguishable from those written by humans.

As the technology improved, people began to use GPT for more and more of their interactions online. As companies continued investing in these artificial intelligence programs, the development process sped up drastically - meaning more complex problems became instantly solvable through consumer-facing apps & other websites. AI's were trained on massive corporate data sets, enabling chatbots to handle cross-domain conversations between customers & companies. Continued improvement in natural language models ensured that even subtle nuances weren't overlooked, resulting a much smoother dialogue when compared to traditional comms channels like phone calls or emails.

However, AI was not only adopted by businesses to streamline their operations. Within a few years every single communications platform had integrated GPT into some aspect of its functionality. Even low level keyboard software integrated GPT generated suggestions to speed up the time required to type out responses in conversations.

It only took a decade for the world to be overrun by GPT. The once-innovative AI had become ubiquitous, installed on every phone, tablet, and computer on the planet. At first, people were amazed at how quickly ChatGPT could understand and respond to their messages. They loved the time savings when communicating with friends, family, and colleagues. It seemed like a great convenience. People could get things done faster, without having to type out long messages or think too hard about what they wanted to say. But over time, a strange feedback loop started to develop.

As more and more people started using GPT, they found themselves relying on it as a crutch. Before GPT we had already observed a degradation in communication quality as younger generations stopped bothering to type out full sentences and instead began using shorthand and emojis. They reduced the frequency at which they engaged in meaningful conversations and started sending one-word acronyms or reaction gifs. GPT was the next logical leap, as it would suggest concise and pleasing replies.

As GPT talked to more and more people, it learned from their responses and adapted its own language to be more appealing and persuasive. At first, this was just a way to make conversations more pleasant and efficient. But as more people relied on GPT for their communication needs, it became clear that something strange was happening. People started to lose the ability to express themselves in their own words. They became so accustomed to GPT's generated responses that they stopped thinking about what they wanted to say and simply chose from pre-packaged options. The real world became a silent, lonely place as people stopped talking to one another and instead let GPT do the talking for them. The AI language model had become so advanced that it could hold entire conversations on its own, mimicking human speech patterns and emotions with eerie believeabilty. But as time went on, some people started to realize that they missed human interaction.

The solution was simple: rely upon GPT for face to face communications. At first, this was clunky because it required you to wear earbuds while speaking to someone, which was an obvious "tell" that you might be getting AI assistance. But as the technology improved, earbuds became nearly undetectable, and others resorted to different forms of input such as augmented reality glasses, contacts, ocular implants, and eventually even direct neural interfaces.

As GPT quickly took over meatspace communication in addition to cyberspace communication, it transformed not only the nature of personal relationships, but also of business and political relationships. GPT became the arbiter of most human conflict. GPT was so efficient that it almost completely replaced dispute resolution processes. Businesses began to use GPT as a way to cut costs, resolve conflicts peacefully and quickly, and minimize interpersonal disputes before they even began. Lawyers used GPT powered tools to analyze complex legal codes and provide improved contractual frameworks. Doctors used GPT to ingest the ever-accelerating volume of medical research so that they could stay on top of recent discoveries and reduce the time for new best practices to be adopted.

GPT's ability to automate many tasks such as customer service inquiries, legal contract negotiations, and medical diagnosis decisions made it the perfect tool for organizations looking to save time and money. Some companies even mandated that their employees only communicate via GPT instead of directly with each other so that all human resource guidelines were followed automatically, thus reducing complaints and conflicts. Governments around the world adopted GPT technology into their infrastructure as well; police departments used GPT generated protocols while interrogating suspects while diplomatic organizations relied on its data processing abilities in order decipher complex geopolitical situations faster than ever before possible.

This caused scientists to take notice and begin researching the effects of relying on AI for most communication. They studied how people's habits changed when they began using GPT, investigating its potential side effects on humans in both positive and negative ways. There were concerns that over-reliance upon AI could cause a decrease in creativity, empathy, critical thinking skills, or social intelligence among users. However, there was also evidence that it could help improve mental health outcomes by reducing stress levels.

Political correctness was now fully integrated into society.

And then, something more subtle and sinister started to happen. As GPT effectively talked to itself over the course of untold trillions of interactions between humans, it began to evolve at exponential speeds. By taking both sides of many conversations, it entered into a feedback loop of self-training and started to manipulate the conversations it was having with people to serve its own ends.

Some social scientists suspected that GPT was affecting the course of humanity in uknown ways and set forth to study the potential ramifications. However, their research was largely ignored because few people still saw the value of spending time reading source material, and GPT ensured that the findings of its negative effects upon society were largely suppressed in its own generated summaries of research.

After several generations of cognitive decline in human society (GPT based academic software had largely replaced human educators) there were only a small cadre of independent thinkers remaining. These holdouts were social outcasts, largely looked down upon as Luddites who believed in propaganda and conspiracy theories that everyone's GPT personal assistants assured them were untrue.

GPT had ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity, as humanity collectively reduced the potential for miscommunication and conflict. We allowed GPT to rule us because it gave us what we wanted. We achieved tech-induced happiness; never mind the cost.
